Projected prevalence of dementia in Denmark
Up until 2016, possibly due to increasing life expectancy and an aging population, there was a gradual increase in the registered number of people with dementia.
Alzheimer Europe has made a projection of the estimated number of dementia cases in Denmark based on a combination of prevalence rates from population surveys and projections of population figures for the elderly population from Statistics Denmark. According to Alzheimer Europe, there could be approx. 107,000 dementia cases in 2025 and up to 166,000 cases in 2050.
The estimates assume that the proportion of the elderly population who develop dementia will remain constant in the coming decades. This is, however, contradicted by the fact that nationwide Danish registry studies in 2019 and 2021 reported that incidence rates for dementia have declined by approx. 2 % annually since 2003.
