Consumption of drugs for dementia

According to the Danish Health and Medicines Authority, more than 28,000 people are being treated with drugs for dementia in the primary sector in Denmark. The number of persons treated is steadily increasing over the years.

Since drugs for dementia were introduced in Denmark in the late 1990s, the number of people being treated with these drugs in the primary sector has increased from approx. 2,300 people in 1999 to approx. 28,280 in 2021.

Nearly two-thirds of patients are being treated with a cholinesterase inhibitor (ATC code N06DA), and almost one-third are being treated with memantine (N06DX). In addition, there is a small group of patients who within a given year either switch from cholinesterase inhibitors to memantine or patients being treated with both types of medication at the same time (combination therapy).
