Dementia and medication
According to the Danish Health Data Authority, more than 30,000 people were treated with dementia medication in Denmark in 2023. The number of people treated is steadily increasing over the years.
Number of people reciving treatment with dementia medication in Denmark
Since dementia medicine were introduced in Denmark in the late 1990s, the number of people treated with these medications has increased from approximately 2,300 people in 1999 to approximately 30,725 in 2023.
Nearly two-thirds of patients are treated with a cholinesterase inhibitor (ATC code N06DA), and almost one-third are treated with memantine (N06DX). In addition, there is a small group of patients who within a given year either switch from cholinesterase inhibitors to memantine or patients being treated with both types of medication at the same time (combination therapy).
